Have you ever thrifted an item simply because it was a good brand? For example, maybe you bought a top, not because you liked it, not because it fit your style words, but because it had a Lululemon or Ralph Lauren tag attached? I’ve done this so many times (and sometimes still do).
Yes, it is exciting to find name brand items at secondhand prices, but it becomes a problem when deep down you know that you will never wear the item. Buying an item just because of the brand name is a huge thrifting mistake (and waste of money) because that item will most likely end up right back at the thrift store after a few wears (if you ever wear it at all).
Here are some questions to ask yourself to avoid buying something just because it’s a good brand.
Questions to Ask Yourself
1. Will someone else cherish the item more than you?
This is the main question to ask yourself when thrifting. If you have any doubts about purchasing an item, try to think about others. Ask yourself will someone else like the item more than you do? Don’t settle for an item you sort of like, when there’s a chance someone else may end up loving it.
2. Does this item match your style?
Does this item fit with other pieces in your wardrobe? Does it match your style words? Asking these questions will help you be realistic. If it does not match your personal style, put it back on the rack.
3. Would you buy the item if it were not a name brand?
This is the moment of truth. If your Ralph Lauren gem had let’s say… a target tag, would you still want to buy it? I find this question helps you determine if you actually like the item or if you only like the brand.
Have you ever bought an item just because of the brand? What happened to that item? What questions do you ask yourself to avoid this?
